Youth and Adolescents’ Open Day

Kenya is a young nation, with 75 percent of its population being under the age of 30 years and 22 percent being between the ages of 15 to 24 years. For Kenyan young people and for young people worldwide – the critical transition from childhood to young adulthood is delicate and challenging and is dependent on support and guidance from the family, community, school, and society at large.

Adolescence is also a period in which critical life altering actions are taken and decisions are made (in schooling and training, relationships and marriage, sexual initiation, and risky behavior). Following these facts the Outspan community has come up with a mentorship programme that is geared towards empowering the youth and adolescents in Kenya by giving them the knowledge and skills required to make the right decisions in their lives.

As part of the mentorship program, The Outspan Hospital and Outspan medical College organized a Youth and Adolescent Open Day. The 2016 Open Day was held on Saturday 8th October 2016 at the Outspan Medical College grounds. Among the major activities slated for the day was a Forum that focused on how the youth can learn how to maximize their potential. The theme of the day was Invest in Knowing Yourself.

The day was graced by a wide range of speakers; we had a Consultant Psychologist, Ms. Cathy Ngarachu who spoke on self awareness. The speaker highlighted on the importance of knowing oneself and how that plays into achieving one’s set goals.

The key note speaker was Mr. Bonnie Kim who narrowed down the theme to Success. Mr. Kim spoke about knowing one’s strengths, weaknesses and how to use this knowledge to help in the discovery of one’s passion. He also spoke about effective goal setting that is key to achieving success. Mr. Kim concluded by emphasizing that success is relative, it is dependent on an individual’s personality, their experiences and their goals, hence no two people should compare themselves to avoid frustration.
The forum was then followed by an Awareness Walk which was geared towards creating awareness on mental health. The walk attracted 700 participants who walked from the OMC grounds down to the Nyamachaki Church Grounds.
